The Best Type of Extensions for Your Hair
While we all know that extensions have been around for some time now, it continues to amaze me how the techniques get better over time. I remember there was once a time when it wasn't even considered "cool" to have added hair to your style. Now, it seems like women can't live without them! The ability to add to your hair to achieve looks that your hair isn't able to accomplish on its own is pretty amazing, sexy, and powerful. Not all extensions are created the same, one method may work for a person, and that same one may not for another. It's important to do your research and consult with your stylist to find what works for your hair and you as a person.
Continuing this extension series, I wanted to dig a little deeper into the different types of extensions so you can get an idea of how you'd like your transformation to go. As extensions continue to be in high demand for salons, new techniques are being used to make the process of longer hair even more seamless, so check out what's available so you can make a decision for your next look!
Wefted Microlinks
As one of the most versatile techniques for hair extensions, wefted microlinks provide clients with a style that blends like magic. Without the time-consuming process of hiding your natural hair in braids, these beads blend with your hair and attach to form one long strand. Wefted hair is attached by weaving strands of hair through the weft and securing it with a microbead. Clients are shocked by the initial range they have with this such a transformational technique. Many stylists have named microlinks to be one of the healthiest and safest options for incorporating extensions.

iTips
While they are very similar to wefted microlinks, iTips are different in terms of the technique used. This type of hair extension is secured onto your natural hair using a microbead. Without using a wefted track, this technique offers more access to the scalp, and all of the natural hair is left out. This eliminates the barrier that braids have when they are used for sew-ins. With more mobility, these extensions can be pulled back into various styles, creating a more realistic look.

Tape-Ins
This may be the fastest way to add hair that isn't clip-ins. The extension tab is about 1 1/2-inch-wide, and on one side, you have a sticky surface that would stick under a parted section of your hair. Then there's another tab would be placed on top, sandwiching your hair between them. From this, one extension piece is created, just like magic, right? Normally 60 full pieces will give you fullness. But one thing to note is that because you are using 2 extension tabs when you buy the hair they come in 40 pieces and turn into 20 full extension pieces. So be sure to calculate accordingly when you purchase. You must make sure the hair is really clean before applying them. If the hair has any amount of product, oil or dirt, they may not stick properly and come loose.

Hand-Tied
Now for Hand-Tied Extensions. This technique is made when a track is created by using thread and bead that will create the foundation for the extensions to be sewn onto. How the thread and beads are used to create that track is the part that is different between the various methods. The beads have silicone on the inside for a tight hold. When it's closed onto your hair, it doesn't slip. However, silicone can break the hair, so you want to make sure the bead isn't too tight to the scalp so you can prevent hair breakage. Keep in mind that some of the track methods may not work for you, and you shouldn't force them. Weight is also an important factor, so you know how much your scalp can handle. Overall when it comes to this technique, it's always best to have a certified or trained stylist because improper knowledge and care can result in something going wrong. Which is never a good time.

Sew-In
Some may think that this method has run its course, but even though it's an oldie, it most certainly is still a goodie. Especially for those who are looking for a protective style, Sew-Ins are still a winner. Give your natural hair a break from the hot tools, products, and styles with a professionally installed Sew-In. The only take-back from this technique is from the braiding that has been done before. Unfortunately, some stylists can tend to braid the natural hair so tight that it pulls and causes tension, and irritation. If this happens, you should quickly have your hair taken down. Any pain or discomfort for more than a week is not ok. Nevertheless, sewing extensions onto natural hair is a great way to protect the natural hair from manipulation. When properly taken care of, the natural hair will grow beyond expectations. What's not to love about that?
